Why are hospitals such lousy places to rest & heal?

Why is it that hospitals seem uninterested or unwilling to make the seemingly simple adjustments necessary to ensure that their patients get the rest they need to enable their bodies to help with the healing process?! It seems as if the health care industry feels that since something in the patient's body needs "fixing", that the body is there just to be acted upon. Why not rather employ a synergestic approach that maximizes the body's own self healing capabilities? Such a healing approach would surely recognize the importance of enabling the body to get adequate sleep while the patient is being treated in the hospital.

Both of my stays in different hospitals, combined with Kim's six hospital stays has consistently demonstrated that hospital personnel are not concerned with repeatedly interrupting patients who are attempting to sleep. Interruptions include repeatedly taking vital signs, emptying catheter bags, drawing blood samples, nurses adjusting intravenous medications, problems with IV medication pumps that trigger noisy alarms, noisily mopping hallways in the middle of the night with nurses insisting that hospital room doors remain open, housekeeping emptying trash in the patient's room in the middle of the night, nurses waking up patients to ask if they need pain medication, waking patients to ask if they need a sleeping pill, etc, etc.

Here is an article about a study that confirms my personal observations:
