This article talks about the similarities between the account in the Book of Mormon of the King-men, who were more interested in satisfying their own selfish lust and sense of entitlement for power and authority than they were in selflessly serving the best interest of their country, and our present day situation in which we find so many who feel entitled to positions of government authority in order to wield power, authority, control, and in most instances get overpaid for doing so. I do not agree with everything the author says and the way he says it (for instance, I think that his use of cutesy words and phrases weakens otherwise legitimate arguments), but I do agree that bedrock principles upon which our government was founded are being eroded and diluted by an increasingly large number of both elected and appointed government workers who are primarily interested in looking out for #1 rather than acting as honorable public servants and patriots. I also believe that this condition is not limited to the current administration of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government, but also extends to persons of all political parties and all levels of government. There seems to be an unending and increasing number of news stories about corruption, ineptitude, and gorging at the public trough by so called "public servants". In addition to the tremendous impact such wickedness and decay from within has on the fabric of our society today, the unimaginably large national debt that is being incurred to curry favor with political allies and fulfill campaign promises is not only placing today's generation in financial bondage, but our children and grandchildren yet unborn. It should be clear that we, as a nation, are selling ourselves, our nation, our once envied economic power, slowly but surely, to our debtors, mostly China and Saudi Arabia- nations which do NOT share our values or have our best interest at heart.
The clear message of our current society and government is that citizens should rely on, even expect, big government to take care of them, rather than teaching the principles of liberty and personal responsibility.
As stated in the "Proclamation on the Family" issued by the LDS Church leadership back in 1995, "...we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets." Will we as a nation heed the lessons included in the Book of Mormon by ancient prophets who foresaw our day and compiled an inspired book designed to help us avoid the problems that afflicted their society, or will the warnings go unheeded and history repeat itself...to our own condemnation and destruction?
